Notes from New Horizons Owners

From: Shari Heywood

Yuma was a home-base for the month of January. Quartzsite was a destination a couple of times to see the RV Show and meet up with friends. Summer travel will include Kansas in June; Colorado for most of the rest of summer heading to Iowa and Illinois for September followed by the Rally before heading back to Hondo by mid October for doctor appointments.

Rather than relate my travels here, see http://www.wandrin.us. It has been a long time since I have met some New Horizons owners on the road. As I was traveling through Durango, CO, I visited with Lisa and Steve Mackey. Anytime I see a New Horizons rig, I introduce myself. The award for chasing a New Horizons rig has to go to Steve Mackey. I will let Lisa tell it in her words....

From: Lisa and Steve Mackey (excerpt from personal email)

.... you will NEVER BELIEVE what happened last Friday, just a couple of days after your departure. We were sitting by the dining room window casually sipping our morning coffee (watching the world go by) when Steve jumped up and said "did you see that New Horizon go down 204 toward the National Forest?!" I looked just in time to see a very large fifth wheel tooling along. Steve hopped onto his mountain bike and chased the poor guy down. It turns out John Swanson has a 34.5 footer and was stuck at the end of a dead-end road. Steve helped him turn around, heard his story, and invited him to park in our field. He said he was looking to stay through Memorial Day, which of course, was fine with us. It further turns out that he was here for the Iron Horse [Bicycle race to beat the train to Silverton - almost 50 miles]. So we had lots in common and enjoyed conversations and "hang time" with a fellow NH owner and cyclist. John travels alone, winters in Taos, and purchased his rig used from an older couple over the Internet. He rode the Iron Horse in 3 hours. Jeez.

From: Tom Marik (email dated May 25)

The last six weeks were spent visiting friends and family in MO and IL. It's been great to spend time with them all. I don't get to see as many sites as I would like to but I enjoy visiting more. Except for Mom, I've stayed in my trailer in RV parks as close as I could get considering the size of my rig.

Still, next week, I'll spend five nights in the Boundary Waters between MN and CA on a canoe fishing trip with a friend I've known since kindergarten. That will be a novel experience to a guy who thinks roughing it means getting by with generator power.

Pushing on to see a friend I met in Rio Hondo, TX at his summer camp near Bismark, ND. Maybe, I'll get to see my youngest cousin near Salida, CO.

Truck and trailer rallies at the beginning of October will start my migration back to Rio Hondo, TX.

From: Gigi and Bob Knibb  (excerpted from a personal email dated June 3)

....We will not be at the NH rally because of family matters in MD. Know we will miss lots of fun and friends. Won't get to the Escapade either.

After coming out of Mexico this winter, we headed west and then north. We were enjoying Oregon and then my father, in Tulsa, needed us so we headed quickly that way. After 24 days there we are headed back west and are now in Santa Fe. We will go on to Chama tomorrow and will ride the train and will do the same in Durango. We will be in Moscow, ID. for Life on Wheels the end of June and then back into OR. for the Nat'l. Railroad Convention and we plan to spend the month of July in OR. On to WA. in Aug. and into Canada, etc., etc., etc. Almost all plans are in Jell-o. Bob has an itinerary and I have a "marksalot." Works great for us.

This serious wannabe is going to be traveling to the rally by truck camper & by canoe.  I'm off to Minnesota in September for a 10-day solo trip into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, followed immediately by the Escapees Escapade, and subsequent to that, the New Horizons Owners Group Rally 2005.  I'm looking forward to every aspect of the journey!

Wish we could join you [for the NH Rally] but will have to see. We are closing our business in Fredericton [New Brunswick, Canada] the end of July and then will have to see how the dust settles before making any plans. Still have our bead and cross stitch supply store in Montreal and we will be relocating there as our main base. Hoping that the closing here will leave us much more time to travel and catch up to people. Our immediate plans after closing Fredericton is to put our feet up for awhile here at the Hartt Island campground and enjoy some biking and boating until the travel bug bites.

Lloyd, keep up the good work and keep us on the list to receive the Newsletters, etc.  That was a close call with your vehicle in San Diego, but glad you got the 'slug' back.  With all your traveling, reading, etc., I don't know where you find the time to keep 'us' all informed also, from us a big Thanks to you.  Not sure about the rally yet, but will see how things develop over the summer.  We are headed to ND and parts up there - one being a big family reunion on Joan's side - have about 350 scheduled to attend.  Be safe and happy traveling.
